Yay for Hermione/Milicent! Yay for hiking! Yay for Hermione and Millicent Hiking!
Seriously, thank you for sharing this rare pair story. I'm always up for an adventure fic, and it was great to have Hermione at the the centre of the adventure for once! Hermione so often gets represented as indoorsy and bookish, but she was right there with Harry and Ron flying thestrals to London, camping, impersonating Death Eaters, destorying Horcruxes etc etc ad nauseam, and it's great to see her adventurous side here! I also think the manner in which you portray it is very believable--chasing history and knowledge and ancient manuscripts, because, at the end of the day, adventurous streak aside, she is a bookworm too. :)
And in that vein, I thought it really worked to have her undertake this journey specifically with Millicent as her partner. Hermione is so loving and supporting, and I can absolutely see her embarking on this trip with Millicent to support her partner's quest for knowledge about the myth(s) she grew up with.
I enjoyed the little glimpses into their form of affection throughout.
"You are the most bearable person on this stupid planet."
"Thanks, I... think." Hermione managed to open her eyes to a warped, watery image of Millicent crouched down next to her, and blinked several times to regain focus. She gave the other woman the most reassuring smile she could muster, the pain receding further. "You could just tell me that you love me, you know."
"Thought I just did."
^ This is le cute!
"Says the woman who went after Lord Noseworthy when she was just a teenager."
^ LORD NOSEWORTHY! Cackling.
Yeah, I really loved Millicient as athletic and capable and at home in the outdoors and with her body. I really appreciated how you created a dynamic in which Millicent's natural physicality and Hermione's natural cerebral-ness rise to meet each other; each pushing outside their comfort zone to be a true partner to the other.
Oh! And I loved the title. It really embodies the feel of the story--a bit of folklore, a bit of fun, a bit of adventure, a bit of a fright!
Thank you so much for sharing F/F content, and especially this ship (which I've been totally into since Azoth).
